Tinnitus

Tinnitus is nothing more than feeling sounds or noises in your ears or head without an external sound source.

Tinnitus symptoms and diagnosis

  • Symptoms and diagnosis of tinnitus
  • Hearing noises, ringing, wheezing, buzzing, or pulsating sounds in one or both ears.
  • Prolonged occurrence of tinnitus, both in silence and in the presence of sounds.
  • Difficulty paying attention and concentrating due to tinnitus.
  • Sleep disturbances such as difficulty falling or staying asleep.
  • Stress, anxiety, irritability, or depressed mood due to constant tinnitus.
  • The feeling of tension or discomfort in the ears.

The diagnosis of tinnitus is based on three steps: taking a medical history, physical examination, and audiological assessment. The doctor may also recommend additional tests, such as audiometry, CT scan, and magnetic resonance imaging, to rule out other possible causes of tinnitus, such as structural damage to the ear or brain.

Tinnitus treatment

Leczenie szumów usznych ma na celu zarządzanie objawami i poprawę jakości życia. Oto kilka metod leczenia, które mogą być stosowane:
  • Sound therapy (sound treatment) consists of listening to mild masking sounds, such as white noise, pink noise, or relaxing music, to disturb the perceived tinnitus.
  • Behavioral therapy: This may include cognitive behavioral therapy to help change the negative thoughts and emotional responses associated with tinnitus and relaxation techniques to reduce stress and tension.
  • Hearing aids: People with hearing loss may use hearing aids. This solution helps both in improving hearing and reducing perceived tinnitus.
  • Medications: In some cases, your doctor may prescribe medications, such as anti-anxiety medications or antidepressants
  • Alternative therapy: Some people use alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, massage, or herbal therapy, but the effectiveness of these methods has not been scientifically proven.
  • TMS therapy is one of the therapeutic methods that is being studied in the context of tinnitus treatment. Research on the use of TMS in the treatment of tinnitus is still being conducted, and although there are promising results, the effectiveness of TMS in reducing the symptoms of tinnitus has not been clearly confirmed. Still, TMS may be considered a treatment option for persistent tinnitus, especially in those who have not improved with other standard treatments.
