Tetany

Tetany is a condition characterized by muscle spasms caused by a deficiency of calcium ions in the blood. The cause of tetany should be sought in electrolyte imbalance or vitamin D deficiency, which affects calcium absorption from the digestive tract. Tetany has different forms; one of them is latent tetany.

Symptoms of tetany

  • Trembling or painful muscle spasms.
  • Tingling or stiffness in various parts of the body, such as the hands, feet, face, or throat.
  • Spasms in the muscles of the throat which may lead to shortness of breath or difficulty swallowing.
  • Increased muscle tone.
  • Involuntary spasms of the facial muscles cause the muscles of the lips, nose or eyes to spasm.
  • Muscle tremors may worsen with exercise or stress.
  • Possible cardiac arrhythmias associated with calcium deficiency
  • Psycho-neurological symptoms include irritability, mood disorders, hand tremors, headaches, and sleep disturbances.
  • Increased sensitivity to external stimuli: sounds, light, and touch.

Tetany - treatment

  • Treating tetany involves identifying and treating the cause. In case of vitamin D or calcium deficiency, supplementation of these substances is recommended. If your calcium deficiency is due to hormonal disorders, treatment for these conditions may be necessary. Sometimes, painkillers or anticonvulsants may also be required to relieve cramping symptoms.
  • It is also important to avoid factors that trigger muscle contractions, such as excessive physical effort, stress, and too intense breathing.
  • Suppose you suspect tetany or experience symptoms similar to those described. In that case, it is essential to consult your doctor for a proper diagnosis and optimal treatment plan.
